Did you have this picture taken in LingNam Studio in DongKhanh Street? It looks so familiar. My parents also had the similar pose. Your sisters' hand bags were cute. We had that too.
Lu : Thank you for you to share your story with us! I have only a few being kept fragment of my childhood because of my grandmother's superstition my family was rarely to take photo.
I'd seen these pics since childhood but had no idea that not just my kid brother had brought them out of VN but he'd gone the distance to preserve them digitally, I owe that to him.
Hi buddy, please ask Hung to put them all onto a CD and send it to me, I need to get hold of the ones which were damaged by the sea water during our boat journey, thank you.
Just spoke to Mom, Andy is in VN now, he has a DVD with him just for you, not sure whether it's the slide show version or the file version, his travel plan includes a possible trip to Melbourne to see you & our new born grand nephew, depending on the cost of fare. His collection is dozens times more than what I show here.
I have no idea, I only remember getting motion sickness after a round of revolving helicopter simulation ride with Andy, and was not feeling well the rest of the outing. but for sure these weren't taken by pro hung around the zoo like when we were little. my 2nd thought, could that be your colleague 亞宝 in TOYOMENKA?
They're Xmas gift from me, vests for my 4 sis are actually not pink but light peach, Mom's is pink. Every Xmas I just pick one style for all 4 sis to avoid civil war ^o^ I remember one Xmas I picked 5 hats of different styles, Man! I was the public enemy that night ^o^
I really don't have a clue(sign of aging obviously). It was so long ago, the zoo seemed to be our favourite outing location all those years. And A Bao never went out with us! Hung rang yesterday but we're not home, I'm looking forward to his call again.
we were indeed, specially you, I remember Mom's favourite pride was that you were born at 3.8 kg, top of the class! and she's still saying that. oops! another private subject? ^o^
when Phuong & I learned that a 'cake' was part of your plan, we're glad to put up our shares in dream of a lavish birthday cake type with cream & icing just like the ones seen on TV, I was a bit disappointed when you eventually presented several cup cakes! ^o^ of course the disappointment was short-lived when Mom got home and got over joy, we had good time.
- when Phuong & I learned that a 'cake' was part of your plan, we're glad to chip in our shares in dream of a lavish birthday cake topped with cream & icing just like the ones seen on TV, not knowing that would've been way out of your budget. honestly speaking, I was a bit disappointed when you eventually presented several cup cakes! ^o^ of course my disappointment was short-lived when Mom got home and got over joy, 3 of us even performed a play '燕歸來' directed by yourself to entertain Mom, we had good time. - I'm refering to the very 1st Mother's day celebration organized by you with your own hand-drawn poster for Mom, cup cakes actually weren't from the bakery but from your classmate whose family baked cakes for bakeries, that's all we could afford as little kids with meager savings. - the celebration with cake from 雪园 was much later when we grew & got more $$, but somehow that very first one was always nailed in my head.
our childhood was simple, study in school and taking care of housework & homework, wishes were seldom granted but no complaints, reward was simple but treasured, we always reasoned with Mom & Dad for better or worse. Looking back at mid-life, we're darned good kids weren't we?
it may still do, I found a web page: http://members.shaw.ca/vnlibrary/temple.html which lists poems displayed on many temples around Saigon/Cholon, the one caught my eyes on 駙馬廟 is indeed quite good: 南朝遠播聲名,靖邊塞,擎天一柱.
The pose can tell the story. I totally agree your parents are the couple forever young. Like father like son. You had similar pose in some of your picture with Chi too .
yeah!芳艷芬 was a super star when you two were born, mom & dad must have had her in mind when they named you. Haha!
Nothing is better than sharing happiness ! Inspiring ! Looking at your photos one after another is like watching a good movie with happy ending. Thanks indeed.
My memory bank must have kicked off around the time of this photo, 'cause I remember this favourited pair of suspender shorts from grandma, also Helen's non-stop crying until the photographer handed her a piggy bank.

The studio was indeed on the same street, but its name was Red Fortune 紅吉 , my Dad's favourite, for a long while we visited there every New Year.

Quyen,
ReplyDeleteMy grandmom perhaps thought the same way, we don't have many pic of her.
Nice photos. I don't have many photos of my family as you do. You are so lucky that you have those remembrances.

All the females wearing pink vest. Were they the uniform of Lu Family or just A Pink Day for the family?

ReplyDeleteHey buddy, that was very, very private!
ReplyDeleteI wonder - does this temple still exist?
ReplyDeleteWe even celebrated Mother's Day back then remember? With a cupcake for mum from Tuyet Vien - next door of Quyen's.
ReplyDeleteThere is a place where it looks quite the same in Melbourne city.
ReplyDeleteMy Bata shoes were my reward from daddy for being the third in the class.
ReplyDeleteThanks to our baby brother, this is my favourite photo of mum, I need to get hold of it, and ...
ReplyDelete...And this one of our beloved and handsome daddy.
ReplyDeleteWe were all big babies, weren't we?
ReplyDeleteDaddy used to say that we're his piggy banks.

ReplyDeleteMom & dad were so stylish!
ReplyDeleteThe "Son King", the new addition to our "Sister Flower" world.
ReplyDeleteThe very classic black & white movies image.
ReplyDeleteThis photo was taken after a fall to the ground, still smiling!

ReplyDelete=====

=====
A nice family! Congratulations!

ReplyDeleteThanks to a boatmate Ms. Anna Bui whose log has filled many memory gaps of my journey on sea in 1979:

The Pulau Babi Tengah island which housed the Pulau Tengah refugee camp has become a resort, anyone interested?

ReplyDelete( 三十年後老友重逢 )
